Bob Payne Obituary

Bob Payne, 92, passed away on Sunday April 3, 2022 at the Oaks at Bethesda. He was born on October 17, 1929, in Duncan Falls, Ohio, to the late Pearl and Laura (Patterson) Payne. Bob was a 1947 graduate of Philo High School and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1954. He spent his career at the Ohio Ferro Alloy Corporation, where he served in many positions, from lab chemist to Safety Director. Bob was a member of Brighton Presbyterian Church, Trinity Presbyterian, and First Christian Churches. He was also a member of the Benevolent Paternal Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) for many years, which he affectionately referred to as the Best People On Earth, and served as Exalted Ruler in the early 1970’s. Bob enjoyed his family, his beautiful creek, golfing, gardening, doting on his grandchildren and sweet dog Velvet, feeding his birds, cheering for his Buckeyes, making his famous hot pepper mustard, and reminiscing about the days when the mischievous Payne boys roamed Duncan Falls.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife Pat, his identical twin brother Bill Payne, sister Maxine Clark, and three other brothers Daniel Payne, John Payne, and David Payne, daughter Sherree DeMent, and grandson Nicholas Romano.

Bob will be dearly missed by his daughter Kristina (Todd) Hawk of Zanesville, grandchildren Tillman and Leila Hawk of Zanesville, John (Michelle) Romano, Ryan Romano, and Katie Romano of Greenville, South Carolina, his great-grandchildren Destiny, Kaiden, Weston, Jack, Ryan Jr., Baleigh, and Briar Romano, and Ava and Cole Burden, many cousins and friends, and his beloved puppy, Velvet.

Visiting hour from 10:00-11:00 a..m. and the service will begin at 11:00 with Pastor Laureen Roe officiating. Bob will be laid to rest at St. Paul’s Cemetery where Zanesville VFW and American Legion will conduct military honors. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Oaks at Bethesda and Genesis Hospice, and requests that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
