Charles Eugene “Gene” Johnson, 82, of Zanesville, passed away Saturday October 28, 2023 at Genesis Hospital Emergency Room. He was born on November 19, 1940 in Lancaster, Ohio, the son of the late Charles E. and Frances W. Johnson. He grew up on a dairy farm in Perry County. He graduated from Somerset High School. He was a United States Army veteran. He retired as a detective for the Zanesville Police Department. He then was the Transportation Director for Maysville Local School District. He was an avid storyteller. He also enjoyed the yearly Johnson family vacation.
He is survived by his wife Teresa Johnson. Three sons Joe (Anna) Johnson, Chuck (Rebecca) Johnson, and Matt (Melanie) Johnson. Nine grandchildren Una (Brandon) Cole, Grace, Clay, Maria, David, Aaron, Drew, and Jake Johnson, and Claire Chandler. One great-grandson Finn. One brother Richard (Lynn) Johnson. Three brothers-in-law Joe (Donna) Barclay, Irving (Katherine) Barclay, and Roy Barclay. Sister-in-law Roberta (Donny) Covert. Mother-in-law Juanita Mohler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Martha Johnson. Two sisters-in-law Margaret Barclay and Diane Johnson.
A time of gathering for family and friends will take place from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Wed. Nov. 8, 2023 at William Thompson & Son Funeral Home in White Cottage. A private family graveside services will follow at Fultonham Cemetery with Pastor Joy Wigal officiating.
