John E. Derwacter Obituary

John E. Derwacter, 89, of South Zanesville, passed away at his home surrounded by his daughters on Thur. June 12, 2025. He was born on May 17, 1936 in Zanesville, a son of the late Albert and Ethel (Orwig) Derwacter. He graduated from South Zanesville High School in 1954. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1957. He received an associate degree  from Franklin University in 1959. He then went to work at Armco Steel for nearly 40 years. After that he worked a number of years at Coconis Furniture. He served on the South Zanesville Fire Department for 54 years, spending part of his tenure as chief. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church on Putnam Ave.


He is survived by his two daughters  Kendra (Keith) Stephens and Krista (Rodney) Schrack. Four grandchildren Lance (Corrie) Stephens, Brady Stephens, Dustin Sheets, and Brittany Burtnett.  Four great-grandchildren Callie Stephens, Steele Stephens, Jayceona Ray, and Gianna Burtnett. One sister Glenda Dicks. Many nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Laura Lee (Hurd) Derwacter. Infant sister Glenna, sister Phyllis Hammer, and brother Charles Derwacter.


Friends may call from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Sun. June 15, 2025 at William Thompson & Son Funeral Home 5765 Gladstone Drive White Cottage where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Mon. June 16, 2025 with Pastor Vera Welker officiating. Burial will follow in Zanesville Memorial Park.
