Robert Stephenson Obituary

Robert James Stephenson, 73, loving husband, father, and grandfather went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, February 28, 2021. He was born in Zanesville to his parents Harley and Josie Stephenson.

More known as Bob to his friends and family, he graduated from Maysville High School with the class of 1965. Bob was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served our country proudly from 1966-1970. He was stationed partly in Japan and Great Falls, Montana. When he returned home he joined the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office. Bob served the public in law enforcement for  38 years, with the last 12 as Sheriff of Muskingum County. During his time as sheriff he was involved with and proudly served as the President of the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association. He currently was a Newton Township Trustee since 2009. Bob was also a member of Masonic Lodge #368 and a member of Meadow Farm Methodist Church.

Bob lived the life many could only dream of. He lived in his childhood home and remarked that he was always just a country boy that God gave the privilege to experience the greatest things in life. He was able to marry his true love, Sonie (Ullman). They started dating in 6th grade and were devoted to each other in marriage for 53 years. They were a real example of lifelong sweethearts and will forever have a connection. Bob was an affectionate father and grandfather. He endlessly loved his kids and grandkids and was a hero and role model for them. He was their biggest fan and supporter.

Bob never met a stranger. He loved to help those in need and would always lend an accepting ear and gave genuine advice. He happily served his community well and participated in many committees. He thoroughly enjoyed public service and wanted to make his community a safe and enjoyable place to call home. He touched many lives during the duration of his life and was a positive influence for all.

Other than a joy from serving his community, he had other hobbies. It was never uncommon to be driving down their road and he would be mowing grass and singing. He loved to sit on the front porch with Sonie and appreciate the view of the countryside that was a part of him. During the seasons he could not be on a mower, he would use his spare time to work puzzles. Bob's devotion to God was evident and he enjoyed listening to his Christian music and singing along. His smile and big hugs will be missed by all of those who loved him.

Bob is survived by his dear wife Sonie, son Robb (Ronda) Stephenson, son Shane (Hope) Stephenson, daughter Ashlie (Matt) Wilhite, grandchildren Tearria, Chelsea, Taylor, Cody, Maxwell, Josh, Jared, Carlie, Bryce, Logan, and Adalyn; sister Rebecca (Dave) Williams; loving mother-in-law Martha Ullman, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and precious friends too numerous to mention. There is also his fur-ever buddy, Rascal.

He was preceded in death by his endearing parents, father-in-law Donald Ullman, Sr. and brother-in-law Donald Ullman, Jr.
