Shirley Ann (Newland) Rice

Shirley Ann Newland Kirkbride Rice, 84, of Zanesville, passed away surrounded by family at 12:45 a.m. Thur. Jan. 12, 2023 at The Oaks at Northpointe. She was born on July 1, 1938 in Clarksville, Arkansas to the late John and Inell Newland. She married James O. Kirkbride June 15, 1957 at the Baptist Chapel on Brighton Blvd. She was preceded in death by James in 1981. She married Edwin (Louie) Rice on Sept. 9, 1983 in Winchester, VA. She graduated from Zanesville High School in 1956. Retired from Greif Bros. with 34 years of service as Purchasing Manager and Sales Service Manager. She was a member of Rolling Plains United Methodist Church, Olive Branch Chapter of Eastern Star where she was past Worthy Matron. She was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1058 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to watch her grandchildren in their various sports and enjoyed playing golf.

She is survived by her son Michael Kirkbride (Tara Wilson) of Duncan Falls; daughter-in-law Debra Kirkbride (Rick Tedrick) of Cambridge; step-son Kevin (Loretta Williams) Rice of Altadena, CA; step-daughter Kelly (Bruce) Neal of Nelsonville, OH. Grandchildren James “Jamie” Kirkbride of Zanesville, TSgt Melissa D. Kirkbride-Rose (USAF Ret. MSgt Mark Rose) of USAF Academy Colorado Springs,CO, Dalton L. Kirkbride (Michele) of Nashport, Logan M. Kirkbride (Jena Colyer) of Zanesville. Step-grandchildren Cory Neal and Megan Neal of Nelsonville; Heather McKahan (Brad Kennedy) of New Concord, Brooke McKahan, and Shannon (Gabe) Coblentz. Great-granddaughters Makailyn M. Kirkbride and Kora Kirkbride, great-grandson Devon Mullis. Brothers Dean Newland of Malta, John Newland of Philo, Tom (Beth) Newland and Joe Newland of Zanesville. Sister-in-law Donna Newland of Pollock, LA. Many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband James O. Kirkbride in 1981, her second husband Edwin (Louie) Rice in 2012. Son Mark J. Kirkbride in 2003. Brothers Wayne “Bud”, Phillip, Robert  “Bob” Newland. Sisters-in-law Yvonne Newland, Linda Newland, Grace Newland, Shelba Rice. Brother-in-law Richard Rice.  

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sat. Jan. 14, 2023 at William Thompson & Son Funeral Home 5765 Gladstone Drive White Cottage where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sun. Jan. 15, 2023 with Rev. Jeff Belt officiating. Burial will be in Duncan Falls Cemetery.
